Jeans & Pants Size Converter

Jeans, Trousers & Chinos

Buying trousers or jeans online is notoriously difficult. You might be a size 32 in one brand and a size 34 in another. To make matters worse, European brands use a completely different numbering system (like 48 or 50) compared to the US and UK standard of inches.

We built the Jeans & Pants Size Converter above to bridge this gap. Whether you are buying denim, chinos, or formal trousers, this tool helps you find the right fit across US (Inches), General Sizing (S/M/L), and European standards.

How to Use This Converter

  1. Select your Waist Size: Choose your usual waist measurement in inches (e.g., 32").

  2. Find the Equivalent: The tool will instantly show you the General Size (Medium) and the EU Size (48).

  3. Shop Internationally: Use the EU number when shopping from Italian or French brands, and the General size for sweatpants or joggers.

The "Vanity Sizing" Problem

Have you ever wondered why your "Size 34" jeans measure 36 inches when you use a tape measure? This is called Vanity Sizing.

Most mass-market brands (like Levi's, Gap, or H&M) label their clothes smaller than they actually are to flatter the customer.

  • The Rule of Thumb: If you are buying from a high-end designer or a heritage brand (raw denim), the sizing is usually "True to Size." If you are buying from a mall brand, the waist is likely 1-2 inches larger than the tag says.

  • Our Recommendation: If you are unsure, use the size of your best-fitting pair of jeans as your reference point in our calculator, rather than your body measurement.

Decoding the Sizes

  • πŸ‘– Waist (Inches): This is the standard for US and UK denim. It refers to the circumference of the waistband. Note that this is different from the inseam (length of the leg).

  • 🏷️ General Size (S/M/L): Usually used for casual trousers, joggers, and shorts that have elastic waistbands or drawstrings. These cover a range of waist sizes (e.g., Medium usually covers 32-34 inches).

  • πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί EU Size: Common in Italy, Germany, and France. A quick math trick: US Size + 16 β‰ˆ EU Size. (Example: US 32 + 16 = EU 48).

How to Measure Your Waist Correctly

There are two ways to measure for pants. Method 2 is usually more accurate for online shopping.

Method 1: The Body Measure Wrap a tape measure around your waist where you normally wear your pants (usually slightly below the belly button for jeans, or higher up for suit trousers). Keep one finger between the tape and your body for comfort.

Method 2: The "Favorite Pair" Method (Recommended)

  1. Take your best-fitting pair of non-stretch jeans.

  2. Button them up and lay them flat on a table.

  3. Measure the waistband from left to right.

  4. Double that number. (e.g., if it measures 16 inches across, your waist size is 32).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is W32 L32? The first number (W) is the Waist size (which this calculator handles). The second number (L) is the Length or Inseamβ€”the distance from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Do Chinos fit differently than Jeans? Yes. Jeans usually sit lower on the hips. Chinos and suit trousers are designed to sit higher on the waist. You may need a slightly smaller waist size for jeans compared to suit trousers because your hips are wider than your natural waist.

What is the difference between Slim, Straight, and Tapered? This refers to the cut of the leg, not the waist size.

  • Slim: Tight through the thigh and calf.

  • Straight: The leg width stays the same from thigh to ankle.

  • Tapered: Roomy in the thigh but gets narrower at the ankle (best for athletic builds).
